Spring is well on it’s way and I couldn’t be happier to see things warming up a bit! Spring IS my favorite time of year, but with all of those wonderful April showers, comes along moss and mold growth too! (Ickies!) Moss and mold triggers allergy symptoms for the nearly 50 million Americans who suffer from seasonal allergies. What’s worse is there’s nowhere to hide either! The fresh air outside is full of pollen and allergens, while the air inside is full of a myriad of indoor pollutions. What can we do?
About Indoor Air Pollution:
Indoor air pollution can pose a problem in many homes. From pollen, mold and dust to animal dander and tobacco smoke, these indoor pollutants can create asthmatic and allergic reactions. To help reduce allergens and improve air quality, an air purifier with the AHAM Verified® seal is recommended. Guardian Technologies tower air purifiers, including the new AC9400, all carry the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) Room Air Cleaner Certification.
The new AC9400 has the highest Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) rating of all the Guardian Technologies air purifiers. The CADR is used by AHAM to measure a filter’s efficacy. The CADR indicates the volume of filtered air an air cleaner delivers, with separate scores for smoke, pollen and dust. The higher the CADR number for each pollutant, the faster the unit filters the air.
The AC9400 CADR numbers are 259 (smoke), 263 (dust) and 275 (pollen). It circulates room air 4.8 times per hour, and is recommended for large rooms up to 402 square feet. It also carries the Energy Star rating, so although it packs power in improving indoor air quality, it does so efficiently.
The AC9400 has a myriad of other features that make it unparalleled. Common household allergens such as dust mites, pollen, mold and pet dander are known to trigger an allergy or asthma attack. The 360° HEPA filter captures 99.7% of airborne particles .3 microns and larger, reducing the airborne allergens in the home. With the activated carbon layer of the filter, the AC9400 helps reduce common household odors including those from smoke, cooking and pets. The optional ionizer can enhance its ability to remove particles from the air. To keep the filter performance optimized, a filter indicator lights up on the display when it’s time to change the filter.
Because indoor air quality can change during the day depending on the room conditions, an air quality monitor set in auto mode detects the amount of particulate matter (2.5PM) in the air and adjusts the fan speed to keep air fresher throughout the day. The numeric value of particulate matter is displayed while the light on the front of the unit changes color providing a quick, visual status of the air quality in the room.
AC9400 users can choose from three speeds or select the turbo speed control for maximum airflow. No need to turn off the purifier at bed time. Light sleepers can let the purifier run through the night. When selected, the sleep mode feature will turn off the display lights, dim the power and switch to the ultra-quiet low speed.

Once a week we get together with other families for dinner and fellowship. Our kids love this because they get to slip outside to play with thirty+ other kids in the dark! Take the glass light bulb covers off ceiling fans and chandeliers and stick them in the dishwasher. They come out sparkling clean and it’s less work for your tired hands.
To clean your shower surrounds without getting your hands wet, dip your favorite mop (try the Libman Wonder Mop) into a solution of 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1 cup of clear ammonia, and 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 gallon of warm water. After cleaning, rinse with warm water.
To clean the smoky, burnt on residue from the glass doors on your fireplace or wood burning stove: Dip a damp paper towel in ashes and use them to clean the glass. You can also use the ashes from your fireplace to clean the glass window on a gas grill.
Clean and deodorize the inside of a refrigerator by making a natural solution of 3 tablespoons baking soda to one quart warm water. Wipe dry with a Premium Kitchen Microfiber Cloth.

I love the book: Making Your Own Greeting Cards & Gift Wrap, which I received from Fox Chapel Publishing. It’s a great book, with holidays covered, as well. I’ve been working on some Easter Cards, and have had the help of this book. All of the Holiday stuff is really gorgeous, especially for this time of year.
Great Things about this book:
- 50 exciting projects for a wide range of beautiful and fun cards, boxes, bags, wraps, and pouches
- Each project includes step-by-step illustrations and beautiful color photographs of the finished pieces
- Includes advice on choosing materials and decorative items to make the most of your cards
- Has handy templates to assist in both the card and gift wrap-making process
- Practical instructions guide you through all the techniques used throughout the book
- Inspirational galleries illustrate how one design motif or tool can be used to create a variety of different results
The step-by-step guides are great. Even someone that doesn’t do crafts often, like myself, would be able to do these items. They make it so simple, and even have pages in the back with guides to making some of the projects. Like there’s an oval, for an Easter Egg.
The projects walk you through the entire process, from beginning to end, with ease. There’s also wedding projects, Halloween projects, which will be perfect for when School starts back up in the Fall, etc.
You need this book, whether you are a crafter or not. I’m telling you, you will use this book.

Psychiatrist Offers Social Media/Momo Challenge Advice to Parents

Even though this challenge has been going around now, and I was even warned by the school, here’s a little advice:
If you’re a parent, hopefully you have heard of the Momo Challenge by now. It’s a dangerous “suicide game” that targets children on social media. Some say it’s just the latest internet hoax while others argue it is in fact very real. Either way: it’s an important reminder that parents need to stay on top of their children’s online and social media activity.
Vinay Saranga M.D., a child psychiatrist and founder of Saranga Comprehensive Psychiatry, offers this advice for parents:
- Keep an eye on what your kids see online: When today’s parents were growing up, the only strangers and dangers they had to watch out for were those in front of them. Social media and the internet are a whole other world and parents needs to be vigilant about what their children are looking at, who they are talking to and what they are doing online. Limit what your kids do on their mobile devices and insist that they only engage on larger screens that you can easily see.
- You have to enquire: Even if your children are well-behaved or you think of them as the perfect kids who would never get into trouble, you still have to talk to them. Don’t just assume everything is okay or that they aren’t engaging in anything dangerous. You need to be the one to bring it up at the dinner table and educate them about staying safe in today’s online world. Ask them who their online friends are, what games they are playing, what they are viewing, etc.
- Teaching common sense: It is the job of every parent to instill basic common sense into their children. Let them know that if they encounter something like the Momo Challenge, it is fake, they should tell you about it, close the page or take a screenshot and report it to the police or proper authorities. Teaching kids how to spot danger, scams and other bad things is a lesson they can carry with them for life.
- Do a mental health check: Just as you would keep an eye on your kid’s physical health, all parents need to stay on top of their children’s mental health. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen from the Momo Challenge, the online world is not all fun and games. Childhood anxiety, depression and online bullying are very real issues these days and must be addressed promptly and properly. Teach your teenagers that if they encounter a friend or classmate who is suicidal, to report it immediately or to call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
- Check privacy settings: As parents, you can control the privacy settings on your children’s devices. Make sure they are set to the strictest levels. Don’t forget to check the settings on all phones, computers and tablets. In addition to the actual devices, remember that many social media platforms also have their own set of privacy settings that you can control as well. There are also standalone software products that can help keep your kids stay safe online.
- Age appropriate guidelines vary: There are all different guidelines for when kids should be allowed to dive into social media and the online world. The best advice is to take it on a case-by-case basis. Generally speaking, the longer parents can delay, the better, as this gives your kids more time to mature. Keep in mind that your 10-year-old might just be more mentally mature than the 12-year-old down the street.
- Watch the time: Just as you would limit how much TV time your kids get, parents must limit the amount of computer or online time their kids get, too. Encourage your kids to engage more in physical activity, more in-person playtime with friends, sports, books and educational activities. Online and social media time should be limited and reserved for when everything else is done or as an extra special treat.
